Outdoor Bowls At Ilminster

 

 

Ilminster Outdoor Bowling Club has a long and successful history, continuing to the current day. Ilminster in the past had one of the most successful men's teams in Somerset,  with great players playing at the Club during that time. This led Ilminster  the Somerset County Cup four years in a row between 1969-1972.

During that time, Ilminster also had England Internationals and County and National Champions in the team, including, Bryn Mattravers, John Wiseman and Charlie Burch. In more recent years players have included current England Junior and Senior International Louis Ridout , Neil Kunc and Robert Paxton playing at the club.

Ilminster is a competitive and extremely friendly club, where the social side of bowls is as important as the competitive nature of the game. All players enjoy the facilities, which include a fully stocked bar and restaurant.

A current Ilminster player is Peter Mattravers, who was England Under 25 Singles Champion in 1979.

In recent years Ilminster men have been a force within Somerset bowls, winning  the Bowlsshirts.com Somerset League Championship in 2010 with a superb display. In 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015,  Ilminster became the first  team to win the Men's Somerset Premier League in back to back seasons, and then continued that success by winnning 4  seasons in a row.

Ilminster men have also won the Somerset Turnbull Cup twice in the last three years. This Cup is a competition that all clubs keenly contest, and hope to win, duto  the history it has within Somerset.

Ilminster currently run four men's league teams in the Somerset County League format. They also play in the Somerset Mid Wessex League which is played during the week and is a very popular competition. This year the Club were runners-up in the Wessex Mixed Triples Knockout Cup. As well as these competitions the club also play in all of the Bowls England Competitions throughout the outdoor season, and entertain visiting teams on tour, and friendly fixtures.

 

 

 

Indoor Bowls At Ilminster

 

 

Ilminster Indoor Bowling Club was founded in 1969. One of the earliest indoor clubs in Somerset. In 1972 Bryn Mattravers won the E.I.B.A Championship, followed by The British Isles Championship in 1973.More success followed as Bryn Mattravers and John Wiseman were selected to play for England in 1973 and 1974.John Wiseman continued to play for England in 1975.


EIBA international Louis Ridout has played for the club in recent years representing the club at national and international level . Ilminster is now joined by World Number 3 Robert Paxton , who currently hold a World Bowls Gold Medal and is current EIBA singles champion .


The club play a large amount of internal league during the week which is around 600 games throughout the indoor season as well as the EIBA club and national competitions and also the Somerset county league and double rink competitions.

 

 Table Tennis At Ilminster

 

 

 


Ilminster also run a very successful table tennis team. This started with local club members wanting to play socially and now Ilminster run teams in both Yeovil and Taunton leagues. Ilminster run 3 teams throughout the year .

 

 

 

Snooker Club At Ilminster

 

 

 

Ilminster also has a full size snooker table , which is available for all members to use. The Club runs internal competitons which have been a great sucess. This is very popular with members who have a game night on Friday nights. Ilminster are also in a local snooker league which runs against clubs all over Somerset on a Sunday evening.
